Kanga Quote translation:
"Yes I’m queer, why does it irk you so my dear?" - Quote submitted by Andrew Kelvis
This is the TRTL kanga honoring Zimbabwe's Queer history.
In the past, Zimbabweans had really diverse sexual practices and gender expressions that were not only culturally acceptable but incredibly commonplace. However, after colonization and (more recently) its post-independent anti-white government push, there was a shift in attitude and Zimbabwean society became quite homophobic, especially because of the erroneous belief that Queerness was a Western product being imposed on Africans. The government, in particular, has been a huge driver of anti-queer rhetoric and has passed several laws criminalizing same-sex sexual acts. Former president Robert Mugabe has (throughout his presidency) actively carried out actions against LGBT people and spoken out in public against homosexuality. Politicians in the country have also used homosexuality and Queerness as a scapegoat during political campaigns, further marginalizing the Queer community in Zimbabwe and adding to the general homophobic sentiment in the country. Recently though, Mugabe was forced into resignation and the new administration (led by President Emmerson Mnangagwa) has been less hostile to the Queer community, with the leading party Zanu-PF even meeting with Zimbabwe's main LGBTI group GALZ (Gays and Lesbians of Zimbabwe) to discuss the general situation for Queer people in Zimbabwe and the challenges they faced.
The kanga's triangular pattern is, therefore, inspired by GALZ, (which was formed in 1990) in honor of the work they have done and continue to do for the Queer people of Zimbabwe. I decided to make the kanga theme a bit "fiery" as well, to represent all the wrath former President Mugabe spewed on this community, with the Kanga saying simply asking him: "Yes, I’m queer - why does it irk you so my dear?"
This kanga is printed on polyester flag material and measures 1 by 1.5 metres.
