Kanga Quote translation:

“Out of place out there shouldn’t have me not fit in within" - Quote submitted by Tindi Amadi

This is the TRTL kanga honoring Burkina Faso's Queer history.

Homosexual acts have always been legal in Burkina Faso (as there have been no laws outlawing same-sex relations in its history) but the society itself as a whole is quite conservative, religious and homophobic. Burkina Faso's kanga features two Queer rights organisations: Lambda, and the Queer African Youth Network (QAYN). Lambda focuses on Burkina Faso's Queer community itself and works primarily with counselling and support to help people deal with their sense of guilt and shame caused by the stigma from society. Thus, the organisation mainly works towards a long-term improvement within their member base, and it is this focus on the community's internal work in this context that inspired the choice of the Kanga quote which says: "Out of place out there shouldn’t have me not fit in within".

On the other hand, the Queer African Youth Network - which is the more visible organisation of the two - has forged itself as a regional network of LGBTQ youth in West Africa. To this end, QAYN also runs an online magazine (Q-zine) that is a pan-African, bilingual (English and French) digital, arts and culture magazine by, for, and about lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex, asexual, (LGBTQIA+) Africans both on the continent and in the Diaspora.

This kanga is printed on polyester flag material and measures 1 by 1.5 metres.
