Kanga Quote translation:

“Let go of all the hate and ignorance and you’ll surprise yourself!" - Quote submitted by EmilyRose

This is the TRTL kanga honoring Botswana's Queer history.

Homosexual acts are currently illegal in Botswana but cultural views seem to be shifting positively as the LGBT community there becomes more visible and accepted in the society. This kanga celebrates the organization LEGABIBO (The Lesbians, Gays & Bisexuals of Botswana) which is the first and main LGBTI advocacy group in the country. The kanga also recognizes the political ally-ship of former President Festus Mogae who has spoken against discrimination of the queer community and who, during his presidency (between 1998-2008) had instructed police not to arrest or harass gays. It's also interesting to then note that in September 2016, an American anti-gay pastor was deported from Botswana and President Ian Khama responded by saying: "we don't want hate speech in this country. Let him do it in his own country." Finally, the kanga also recognizes the Botswana High Court which has also been at the forefront of LGBT rights in the country. In 2016, it ordered the Government to register Botswana's main LGBT organisation (LEGABIBO) and in 2017 it ruled that transgender people have a constitutional right to change their legal gender. This kanga was therefore designed in the Botswana flag colors (blue, white and black) to honor both the presidencies and its high court, while the square pattern is a nod to the org LEGABIBO. In order to capture the changing attitude towards the Queer community in Botswana, I chose the kanga quote that says: "Let go of all the hate and ignorance and you’ll surprise yourself!"

This kanga is printed on polyester flag material and measures 1 by 1.5 metres.
