Kanga Quote translation:
“Your kisses are poetry to my skin" - Quote submitted by Chediac
This is the TRTL kanga honoring Austria's Queer history.
Homosexual acts were illegal in Austria until 1971. Considered a largely conservative country due to some lingering nazi influence, Austria is becoming more open to its Queer community and has recently made some amazing strides for LGBTI rights. For instance, Transgender people in Austria can change their legal gender and name to match their gender identity, and intersex people can choose to officially identify as "inter", "other" or "X", rather than just "male" or "female" in their documents. Also, from the 1st of January, 2019, same-sex marriages will be legal in Austria.
The Queer scene in the country is mainly located in its major cities, with Vienna being the home to the largest queer population and Austria's two main LGBT organizations: RKL (Rechtskomitee LAMBDA) and HOSI Wien (Homosexuelle Initiative Wien). While both organizations are involved in the country's political lobbying, the RKL (founded in 1991) mainly focuses on litigation while HOSI Wien (founded in 1979) is involved in organizing Austria's main LGBT event: the Rainbow Parade (or the Regenbogen Parade). It is these two organizations that are featured in the kanga. It is also interesting to know that in 2015, around 2,000 protesters staged a ‘kiss-in’ outside a cafe in central Vienna where a lesbian couple were refused service and asked to leave after sharing a kiss. It is the spirit of this moment (and the uniqueness of the "kiss-in") that inspired the choice of the Kanga quote that says: "Your kisses are poetry to my skin"
This kanga is printed on polyester flag material and measures 1 by 1.5 metres.
